It was in great shape for being hundreds of years old. That alone made him suspicious.

"Where'd you get it?"

The dealer hesitated for only a second. It was enough. "I found it at an estate sale. Imagine my surprise. It's rare to find any copies at all, let alone one in such a condition."

"How much you want for it?"

She may have hesitated when it came to its origins but she was more than ready to quote a price.

Jim's face scrunched and he eyed the woman across the counter with open disbelief. "Give it to me for half that and I won't report it's stolen."

"Stolen?! How dare you! I am a reputable dealer. My credentials are without-"

"'The lady doth protest too much, methinks.'"

The quote made her pause midway through the tirade. A moment of consideration followed as the fake outrage dropped from her expression. "Deal," she announced.

Two days later, she was in jail. The book was returned to the Academy Resource Library, the singular source for rare books on the west coast. And for 48 hours, he'd read, held, and coveted the first edition of Shakespeare.

Totally worth it.
